I know Metaplace is closing, but there is a great virtual world called www.onverse.com that is just starting out you can join here http://www.onverse.com/invite.aspx?r=9885

Until Metaplace comes out with the next big thing we can enjoy Onverse!

It doesn't look like there's much user-created content. There's two kinds of in-game currency, one of which must be purchased. (so guess which is required for most purchases?) The client ran pretty snappy, even at 1280x800 on my older laptop, with details set to maximum. If you want to find me on there, I kept the name existentia and have an apartment on the moon.

Onverse has no user generated content and it's more like a social hangout with places to explore. :)

I am in Second life and it has cleaned up it's act a lot this last year. It still has adult worlds but no one can get in them unless they have their age verified and there are warning notices in all public places asking you to refrain from being nude in them. While building is hard and you do need to own land for many things, it is still possible to rent a small area quite cheaply and add a few prims.

I have joined a group and set up home in a little beach house, it lovely, so nice in fact that I wish that it was the real thing with waves crashing down almost on my doorstep :D

SL is not for everyone but it's not as bad as some...

Never heard of it. Good luck to them though. Unless a virtual world is already established, it is VERY hard to succeed

Agreeing. However there are a few new startups that are pretty well populated and know.
