Metaplace was such a unique site. I don't think that any other site will be like metaplace.... I'm really sad MP is going.

I recently came across this site http://www.smallworlds.com/ I'm not exactly sure of the details, appears to run in_browser and has some cool avatars. In many ways MP was mature and childish - You wont find that easily.

I've heard of Unity but haven't the time to download it...

Unity is not actually a Virtual World. It is an advanced 3D game engine used by developers who want to make games. It's not even multiplayer out of the box; you would have to specifically program your game to be so. Unless you are planning on learning how to build games, Unity is not for you. If learning how to do this is your desire, then all the power to you.

I agree Unity is advanced game building tech. I havent seen the internet player but if someone were to make a sort of chatroom in Unity they could use the internet player and host it somewhere.

The internet player only provides access to the game you create; it does not allow other people to play it WITH you. You would need to rent an actual game server, then program your game to interact with that server. It gets complicated.
