Metaplace gone. Where to go now?

Ive been asked this all day (well since i found out). I figure lots of people will have ideas of where to go and hang out.

So i thought id start this thread and see who has any ideas. It would be good to judge it based on Metaplace, buliding, social, and explore values. Also how easy it is to use, how much development/creation can be done, etc etc.

Im not saying everyone should jump over to these places, just might be worth taking a look at a few.

Obviously, Secondlife will be on the list. The learning curve is steep, but the ablities to create and socialize are beyond anything else. Another thing to note its a 18+ system. I also heard somet hings about Roblox and a couple others tonight. Feel free to add to teh SL comments or any of the other stuf. Im curious as to where people are thinking of going.

Actually I'm not THAT familiar with most expansions of the Metaville. I did use the Google VW for a while, until that too closed. So yeah, I'm still waiting for a better Metaplace really.

Hi guys,

I was developing a world room in Metaplace. Just started in December...

I dont know any other solution with the ease of use (just need to embedd the link in my webpage!) and the cost of Metaplace...
No need to download any plugin or software...

Can you please point me in the right direction?

Is there anything else with the functionality similar to Metaplace?
Will Metaplace offer "something" to corporate users, in January?

Thanks

sl isn't only 18+, there's pg and teen sl areas. In fact recently they've moved all the adult content off the mainland.

The learning curve isn't that steep but it's enough to put people off at first. It's worth sticking with it for a few visits.

Wow I didn't realise Lively had closed btw.

heya every1,

Isn't Second life the sort of one where you need to pay? CZ i went to join and it asked for my card number, i then gave up. Don't get me wrong, its an ace site, but it means having to download everything. I used IMVU, but after a while it got boring because i couldn't figure out what to-do. Its so hard to find a good Virtual Website. I'm currently using, ourWorld, its 2d, but you get to chat and look up different places, I'm new there so i don't now if you have to pay or not, but it looks really good peeps! N the good thing about it is that, you don't need to sign up first, you can try it as a Guest, and if you want to save what you are doing, that is when you can become a member. It looks easy to use, but Ive only literally just got it lol. Oh and, its a Flash based game so you don't need to download anything!!!! =D

Any chance this forum will include live chat, like the ning.com communities?

If it makes anyone feel better, we can sign-up as a group for Habo Hotel, and just stand around talking in complete sentences to make all the tweens think they have been invaded by grown-ups.

No you don't need to pay for SL. It's only when you want to buy land or inworld currency that you do have to pay. It asks for a CC when you register to verify age since it's 18+. I think it's optional though since I don't have a CC on file with SL yet I can play. :D

@Dalian: That'd be amazing, we should do that.

While Dalian's suggestion to drop a little social hackery on Habbo is tempting, I'd like to suggest that members of the MP community migrate to OpenSim based worlds.

There are a variety of reasons, but in short:

- OpenSims can run locally, without need for a grid connection
- You can trivially navigate across OpenSims via the built-in "hypergrid" system.
- OpenSim allows for pluggable scripting engines, and I'd like to see Lua get some attention there.
- While there are some technical and legal gripes*, OpenSim is the best open, 3D metaverse platform right now.
- It's rapidly evolving and will continue to do so.
- This is an especially vibrant community and would be a real benefit to OpenSim evolution.

OK, so I'm a bit biased I'll admit, since I've been working with OpenSim for quite a while. But anyway, my 2 cents.

* .net/mono-based. Wouldn't have been my choice, but that particular die is cast.

Somebody needs to make an "official" sticky of alternatives...
